Snail Kites Holding On

If you're in South Florida and you want to see nesting Snail Kites then Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge is the place to find them. At Green Cay we have had a few flyovers or maybe an occasional perched Snail Kite like the one taken above by my friend Bill, but for the most part the Snail Kites haven't found us, yet. There are quite a few pairs at Loxahatchee and one of the nests even has babies. My friend Andy and I went over last week to get his lifer Snail Kite and though they were out in the impoundment area a good ways we couldn't miss those bright orange legs and dark bodies perched low on the Cypress Trees. The Miami Herald came out with an article about Snail Kites over the weekend if you're interested. Researchers say that fewer than 1000 of these birds are left. With that in mind, get yourself outside and find a few Snail Kites to admire!

If you go in the main entrance past the toll booth take the first left and park at the farthest edge of the parking (south end). Walk the path and they are nesting in the second cell. There's a bird blind about half way down the second cell where you can get a good look with your binoculars. They are nesting in some Cypress trees in the middle of the cell.

Joe: Good luck at the refuge, it's hot out there so you may not stay long.

Tabib: I'll pass the word to my friend. He takes excellent photos of the birds at my work.
