Butterfly Central Time

The butterfly garden at Green Cay is thriving. We have Julias and Zebra Longwings flying all around. The Gulf Frittilaries and Zebra Swallowtails also make appearances but the show stoppers are the ones in this post. The Great Southern White, seen above, is the most numerous butterfly at Green Cay. Sometimes it seems like we have a sea of these white butterflies flying around. They are especially abundant in the Cypress area of the parking lot retention pond. There are many types of wildflowers there that they seem to enjoy.

And the small little butterflies below, Cassius Blues, are one of my favorite. At first they are lost in the mix of large brushfoot butterflies found at Green Cay but then you notice their little bluish wings that seem to be flapping constantly all around. If you're lucky they may even slow down enough for a quick identification, like in the mating poses below.

I am glad to see butterflies somewhere, as my garden has nor attracted many this season.

I have seen a lot of butterflies this year...but then again I am on the look out for them since I bought a new field guide. They are most plentiful in the heat of the day.
