Old Coots
In the winter we have American Coots by the hundreds at Green Cay. In April they all left us except for this pair. They have been here all summer long paddling around the big open water area. For a brief time in May a third Coot was with them but he eventually must have felt like the third wheel and disappeared. I've been keeping a close watch on these two to see if perhpas they would nest here. Coots can nest in Florida but they are unpredicatable and irregular. So far, I've seen no indication of a nest or any young. Mostly, they just paddle around feeding and every now and again, I can sneak up on them and see their long lobed toes streaking through the algae.
