Egyptian Geese visit Green Cay

Egyptian Goose at Wakodahatchee Wetlands, taken by Ken Marx.

The Egyptian Goose has been breeding in Florida for the past 10 years at least. It's an introduced non-native that frequents golf courses and housing developments. Slowly they seem to be increasing in number. I saw my first Egyptian Geese fly over Cape Florida bout 2 years ago and since then many reports have come from the nearby Wakodahatchee about the birds being seen there. But on last Thursday I saw my frist ever Egyptian Geese at Green Cay. Two birds were sitting near the Cypress Island on the mile trail. They really are pretty birds but being non-native I wasn't very happy that they managed to find my beloved Green Cay Wetlands. I guess we will see how this population interacts with the native birds. I'm definitely going to keep my eye out for them. I doubt this will be the last time they come for a visit.
