Northern Harrier

Photos taken at Green Cay by Bill Kominsky.

The Northern Harriers at Green Cay have been really active this winter. This is a really great raptor to see in action. They cruise low over the wetlands and perch right in the vegetation like the female you see above. Northern Harriers have facial disks like owls to help aide with hearing. You can find them at our marsh searching out rats and rodents but I've seen them dive bomb a bird or two. The Bald Cypress have lost their leaves, the plants are brown, and the harriers are soaring about but I know that this winter is going to be short. Before we know it the sun will be back out and the temps will be back into the 80s and 90s. Until then, I'm going to soak in some more cool weather and harrier action.
