Palm Beach County Big Year

My blogging has been sporadic this year. At the beginning of the year I was hit with some laptop theft (x2) and then I just fell out of habit of writing daily but this will all change when 2010 comes along. Starting January 1, 2010 I am going to attempt a Big County Year in Palm Beach County, FL where I live. I have never tried such an endeavor but I am getting very excited about the prospects and I plan on blogging this PBC Big Year here at the Flying Mullet. So get ready folks I hope to entertain you with lots of birding adventures.

Until then I plan on filling out the year with my Top Ten Lifers of 2009 list. Last year's list had great birds such as Golden-winged Warbler, Mangrove Cuckoo, American Flamingo, and Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl just to name a few. This year I have far fewer birds to choose between. One must remember that I started listing in 2007 so I had lots of birds last year but this year that number is much smaller. Nonetheless, I saw some amazing species this year and sometimes it's more about the adventure to get the bird than actually seeing it. So look forward to that coming in the next few days.

I'll leave you with some photos shot recently at Green Cay by my friend Bill Kominsky. It's a great time to bird the wetlands and I been getting nice bird counts recently with species numbers in the 50s so you should check us out. And if you're on Facebook we finally made a fan page, so add us as a group to keep posted on lastest developments. Can't wait until 2010, the PBCBY record is ready to be smashed (Yes, my friends there is no record that I know of so I win by default I believe but that's not going to stop me from trying to get a nice number for the County).
