Tree Frog Meditation

The walkway into Green Cay is a fun place to spot butterflies, skinks, and snakes. And usually I hear a chorus of treefrogs off in the distant wet areas of the parking lot drainage ditches. We have a small "butterfly garden" which is just an area of native flowering plants that has been quite productive this year (hence all the butterfly posts of late). This week I was surprised to find a very serene Squirrel Treefrog (Hyla squirella) sitting on the Milkweed.

We have three species of treefrog at the park: Squirrel, Green, and Cuban. The majority of the treefrogs in my treefrog monitoring data are Green and Cubans with a few Squirrels here and there. It's always a pleasure to find a Squirrel and this one gave me quite a photo opportunity. I love the color patterns and the way its toepads are tucked under the body, almost like it is in a deep meditation. Maybe frogs don't meditate but it seeing this one did provide my day with some peace.
