On this week's bird count I had almost 20 Black-necked Stilts (Himantopus mexicanus). This isn't really a high number but the stilts disappeared a few weeks ago and only a few were still hanging around Green Cay. I figured they were done with us for the season but then we dropped our water levels on the south cell and back they came in full force.
We had at least two successful nests this year. We probably had at least half a dozen nesting pairs at one time but then the June rains came and washed them all away. I only saw three young stilts after those seasonal rains. A few more pairs are nesting again with our new water levels. I'll be interested to see how many of them make it this time around. We need the rain but I would love to see some more of those beautiful little black and white puff balls on long legs.

Black-necked Stilts are way cool. I've been enjoying your pictures and accounts Eva.
