A family came into the nature center between the rain squalls today. They bought some coloring books in our gift shop and out they went. A few minutes later they were back inside with this little fellow, Kinosternon bauri. The son had almost tripped over him on the way to the car. Since they were steps from the nature center they brought him back in to me. After a few glam shots I released him back into the wetlands.
I love turtles and I think these little Striped Mud Turtles are precious. Also, I like that they have a double-hinged plastron similiar to box turtles. The range of this turtle extends from Virginia down to Florida but the three longitudinal stripes on its carapace seem to be lacking in the turtles north of Florida.
