My visit also involved seeing a good friend and checking out lots of birds, 61 species was my final count for Sunday and Monday. The highlights were Florida Scrub Jay, Swallow-tail Kite, Wilson's Plover, Snowy Plover, 3 species of tern, and the numerous White-eyed Vireo. In addition to birds we saw plenty of butterflies, insects (like the Lubber Grasshopper below), and Green Tree Frogs.
Here's a quick picture from Sanibel Island. The water was beautiful, the rainy weather held off, and the Sandwich Tern even showed itself. Sometimes I feel like I hate Florida in the summer but this weekend proved to be a fine adventure. The only downer to Lee County is that they charge you a fee at every park, which makes me appreciate Palm Beach County parks even more. Of course that could all change in the next year with the budget cuts that are going on. Regardless of the fees, it was definitely worth the time and money to see some cool wildlife.

I saw this orchid on a TV program a few weeks ago. It was also featured on a PBS program on Florida nature last summer.
I have a small collection of orchids, so this is exciting to me.
It was beautiful to see and the fact that this is an organism that may go extinct in our lifetime is saddening. Go see it if you're into orchids. Also, Corkscrew is absolutely gorgeous.
