Summer Snakes and Other Herps

Once summer arrives in South Florida we are in for a treat of sweltering days, afternoon showers, and a drop-off in the number of bird species. That last one especially saddens me. So what is a girl to do if the birds are gone, well she has to remember that the herps are still around. If we have night rainfall then the Green Tree Frogs will be chorusing me as I arrive at work. The Green Cay tree frog monitoring project hopefully will get off the ground in the next few weeks. Currently we have Cuban Tree Frogs, Green Tree Frogs, and Squirrel Tree Frogs inhabiting the wetlands. The snakes are my favorite to catch out and about. Here are a few that I've seen lounging on the boardwalk this past week.

I have not seen a Green Snake for years. Stay away from the Cotton Mouth, as they are nasty tempered!

That's a Ribbon Snake in the top picture and a baby Southern Banded Watersnake in the bottom picture.

I struck out!

No worries, many people confuse these snakes. I bet many a Banded Watersnake has met its death due to the cottonmouth mix-up.
