Little Stilts

The Black-necked Stilts have finally, successfully hatched some babies. Last year there were quite a few nests here at Green Cay but the water levels changed drastically and drowned the nests. This year I feared the same after three days of rain and all the visible nests destroyed. But then yesterday on my bird count I saw 3 babies. Somehow they had survived!

Black-necked Stilts are one of my favorite birds at the wetlands. I love their barking call, their black and white dress, and those long pink legs. And their babies aren't bad either, little puff balls on stilts. At least 3 more pairs were back at the nesting game this week. I'm hoping that they build their nests higher this time.
